Building Tennessee’s future through education

UT Promise is an innovative and transformative, undergraduate scholarship program introduced by UT President Randy Boyd in March 2019 and designed to provide free tuition and mandatory fees to qualifying Tennessee residents enrolling at University of Tennessee campuses in Knoxville, Chattanooga, Martin, Memphis and Pulaski.

UT Promise is a last-dollar scholarship program that will guarantee free tuition and mandatory fees for in-state, undergraduate students with a family household income of under $60,000* and after other financial aid is applied (such as Pell Grants, HOPE Scholarship, or other institutional scholarships). All qualifying students must receive and maintain the HOPE Scholarship and be admitted to the institution to be eligible for this new scholarship. To help ensure success, students will be matched with volunteer mentors and will complete eight volunteer service hours each semester.

UT Promise welcomed its first class in fall 2020. The scholarship program includes first-time freshmen, transfer students, and nontraditional students, as well as all eligible students who are currently attending any University of Tennessee campus. UT Promise is an expansion of scholarship offerings and does not replace existing scholarships.

*Family household income is defined as “the accurate, verifiable total combined amount of parent and student adjusted gross income and untaxed income of less than $60,000, AND a total maximum asset amount of less than $75,000, as defined on the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).”

“It is critically important that we take a lead role in ensuring students can achieve their dream of obtaining an undergraduate college degree.”

Randy Boyd
UT System President
