Types of Chapters
There are three main categories of chapters: Active, Informal, and Inactive.
Active Chapters
Within a Tennessee county or a geographic designation that contains a minimum of 300 alumni living within a fifty-mile radius of a major metropolitan city and meets the following criteria:
- Chapter code assigned in ANDI (Alumni and Development database at UT)
- Volunteer leadership in place
- Hosts at least one event every two years that includes a UT speaker and alumni staff member
- Elected Board of Directors for chapter
- Data Confidentiality signed by current President of Chapter on file at the UTAA
- Maintains a checking account for the chapter
Benefits:
- Provided a speaker from UT for annual meeting (dependent upon budget and speaker schedules)
- Eligible for UTAA Scholarship Awards Program
- One spot at the Alumni Leadership Conference in June of each year
- Receives at least one annual meeting event mailer every year (based on budget constraints) – mailer is sent only to those who do not have emails on file
- Assigned a Director of Alumni Programs to work with the chapter
Informal Chapters
Geographic areas where alumni activities occur on an irregular and/or informal basis but at no time in the past functioned as an active alumni chapter.
- May have strong volunteer leadership but inadequate alumni numbers to establish an active chapter
- Programming involves activities, but there is not an annual meeting with a speaker from UT nor attendance by Director of Alumni Programs
- Typically the first step before becoming an active chapter
Benefits:
- Eligible for UTAA Scholarship Awards Program
- One spot at the Alumni Leadership Conference in June of each year
- Receives at least one chapter event mailer every two years (based on budget constraints)
- Assigned a Director of Alumni Programs to work with the chapter
Inactive Chapters
Geographic designation that at one time in the past met, but no longer meets, all of the criteria required to maintain active status.
- May host alumni events on an informal and irregular basis
- Ineligible to receive UTAA scholarship awards regardless of achieving specific levels of participation.
