Tips

  1. Make an annual plan – map out your guide for the next year.
  2. Be prepared, but be flexible.
  3. The president should follow all items on the checklist included in the meeting kit.
  4. Committees, committees, committees – get other people involved through committees when planning an event or activity. Everyone has individual talents – use them for the good of the group.
  5. Remember – you and the chapter are representing all campuses of the UT system. Please remember this with decorations, your website design, and when talking with alumni in your area.
  6. Encourage UT alumni to utilize the UT Online Community to connect with classmates and update their information. Also, it is a great way to have an email address that does not change when you change your job or your internet provider.
  7. During preparations, the chapter president should be well informed on all aspects of the meeting. Communication, communication, communication.
  8. You can’t please everyone – you will always have some people in your area that will not like this or that about a program. Be true to the UTAA and the chapter – the goals of the chapter are important.
  9. The director of alumni programs and the chapter president should be in contact with one another several times before a meeting to be sure that the details are moving forward.
  10. Stay on target to get information back to the UTAA in a timely manner for an event. One graphic designer handles the mailers for ALL 95 active chapters, the timeline helps the mailers be designed in a timely manner – the UTAA needs your help to make this happen.
  11. Chapter leaders and board members need to be sure to maintain their current contact information with the UTAA.
  12. Leadership Conference is coming before you know it. It is typically held the third weekend in June. Think ahead to be sure you have representation at the conference.
  13. The Director of Alumni Programs that works with your chapter is a resource. Ask questions, ask for advice, and allow them to be involved to help you to be successful.
  14. Be open to new ideas from your leadership, your constituency, and the UTAA. The UTAA is a very diverse group; you have the opportunity to reach a great number and wide variety of people in your area.
